Jamaican Military Museum & Library
ABOUT

The Military Museum dates back to the early 1970’s and was originally located at Curphey Barracks, Up Park Camp, home of the Third Battalion The Jamaica Regiment (National Reserve). Since that time, the military museum has been under the guidance of the Institute of Jamaica . The museum then, was a small room with limited space for the number of artifacts that needed to be displayed. Additionally, the location proved to be out of the reach of the ordinary visitor because of how far in the camp it was located.
On 31July 2006, the military museum was relocated to a self–contained complex on the JDF Supply Depot (now the Logistics Company), in close proximity to the front of Up Park Camp. This new location offers much larger buildings for the museum, with the capacity to display a lot more artifacts.
Artifacts on display date back to Jamaica ’s first inhabitants the Tainoes and include uniforms, medals, silverwares, weaponry, military vehicles and equipment. The set up of the museum seeks to showcase the type of defense strategies and weaponry used by the different groups that occupied the island.
On the same compound that houses the military museum is the military Library and Internet Café. This part of the facility came about out of an idea to have a military research and study centre to facilitate persons pursuing various studies and research in a calm and relaxing setting. Being a military library, the books displayed for reading are strictly military oriented and are not given out on loan, but are available for persons reading pleasure. The Internet Café boasts approximately twenty (2) modern computers with interactive communication and viewing flexibility. In addition, the facility offers photocopying, scanning and printing services at minimal costs.
